2021 Renovation Update #5 - Irrigation

As would be expected our rainy season has created some challenges, but the golf course renovation continues to progress at a good pace and things are going great!

In June we received 12.93" of rain at Olde Florida, which is several inches over the historical monthly average of 8.89." With many of the rains in June being excessive (hard and fast), the new Better Billy Bunkers have been put to the test! I am pleased to report that they have performed exceptionally! Our July monthly average is 9.18", August typically brings 9.02" and in September our average is 8.66". Consequently, in the summer months (non-renovation years) the irrigation system is normally only needed to provide supplemental water. However, when the dry season begins in October, a functional and precise irrigation system is critical to the health of the turfgrass and ultimately the enjoyment of the playing surface!   

With that understanding, the focus of this renovation update is on the 2021 upgrade of the irrigation system. The irrigation component of the project accounted for just under 12% of the total budget. The upgrade was to the components that place the water on the ground, not in the pumping or movement of the irrigation water.  

All of the PVC pipe and ductile iron fittings that were installed at Olde Florida in 1992 remain in good condition. In 2010, we performed our first irrigation renovation. At that time we added additional mainline pipe, we converted from a hydraulically controlled RainBird system to an electrically actuated Toro system and the pump station was replaced. 

This summer we replaced all of the 1253 irrigation heads and the 34 field satellites. Like most things in our world, the technological advancements of golf course irrigation components have progressed at a significant pace. With the irrigation system being a key and critical component of our ability to maintain a healthy stand of turfgrass the time was right for the upgrade.

First and foremost, the Infinity series head has improved uniformity of water distribution. There are also numerous other features that we are very excited about.

One of the most impressive features of the new Infinity head is the "Smart Access." The Smart Access provides top accesibility to all critical components. This means no digging or unsightly turf repair scars. By removing three screws on top of the irrigation head (cover) we can inspect and repair many aspects of the head. On the previous irrigation heads this would have required the head to be dug up. The Smart Access compartment also provides room to add components that will be developed in the future. The protective enclosure also isolates the signal wire splice from the soil and potential shorts and it provides access for system troubleshooting without digging.

The new field satellite also includes numerous advancements. The first being a switch from analog to digital wireless communication between the central computer significantly improving communication signal integrity. Another key aspect is a faster microprocessor and increased memory for high performance today and the capacity for future enhancements in the future. Other improvements include clear vented covers on circuit boards providing protection from pests and corrosion and increased stainless steel and plated metal parts that give additional corrosion resistance. 

An aesthetic improvement is the color of the pedestal. I specified a custom "tree bark" color, instead of the traditional green pedestal to increase blending into the natural surroundings at Olde Florida.

Almost 16% of this summers irrigation system upgrade was offset by the sale of the used components. Prior to the renovation I negotiated the sale of all of the old irrigation heads and satellites to a company in Arizona that buys used irrigation components. That company disassembles and refurbishes the equipment and sells the items.

2021 Renovation Update #4 - Sprigging

Until the last two weeks the weather has been phenomenal for golf course construction. However, we knew it was inevitable that the Southwest Florida rainy season would arrive, and it has in full force!  

Even with Mother Nature not fully cooperating the project continues to progress as planned. The first six holes (3-8) and the practice green area have been grassed, Better Billy Bunkers on these holes are complete, numerous ancillary projects are finished and the grow-in of the sprigged areas is underway.

Often when discussing the renovation project questions have arisen about the seeding of the golf course. The questions are understandable since when establishing cool season grasses (bentgrass, bluegrass, ryegrass, etc.) seed is a common planting method. 

In Florida, we use warm season grasses (primarily bermudagrass) on golf courses. Without getting too deep into plant genetics, it helps to understand that only common bermudagrass is viable from seed. Common bermudagrass is a 36 chromosome plant, and while there have been some improved common varieties, in our situation they were not an option. 

In analyzing our needs at Olde Florida it was decided that TifTuf, a hybrid bermudagrss was the best choice for our facilty. Hybrid bermudagrasses, like TifTuf were created to have improved golf and athletic field characteristics. In addition to TifTuf, examples of  hybrids include; TifWay, TifSport, TifEagle, TifGrand, Latitude 36, as well as many others. 

In laymen’s terms to create a hybrid bermudagrass a 36 chromosome plant (common bermudagrass) is crossed with an 18 chromosome plant (African bermudagrass) and what is produced is a plant that has improved attributes over each individually and is pollen and seed sterile.

Now that the plant genetic stuff is out of the way, let's talk "sprigging"!   

Since hybrid bermudagrasses (like TifTuf) are sterile they can't be planted by seed. They are planted "vegetatively."  This means they are established from sprigs or sod. One advantage of sprigging is it's much more cost effective than sodding. In fact, for every one acre of sod installed you could sprig 10 acres. When deciding how much, and where sprigs or sod should be used there are numerous factors, not just planting cost that must be considered

Sprigging is the process of removing stems (stolons or rhizomes) from a mature stand of turf and replanting the vegetative cuttings in a different location. All of our Certified TifTuf Bermudagrass sprigs (and sod) are harvested from Pike Creek Turf in Adel, GA. The turfgrass is harvested the day prior to the requested delivery date and transported overnight so planting can be begin at 7:00 a.m the day after harvest. This is very important! Successful establishment is highly dependent on the timing between obtaining, planting and watering.

Sprigs are typically 3 to 6 inches long and contain numerous nodes (i.e. growing points) from which new roots and shoots develop. Site preparation is critical to provide good sprig to soil contact and enhance establishment rate. 

Our site preparation (after eradication of the existing turfgrass) included multiple vertical mowings, multiple aerifications at a 2" depth, sand top-dressing in wet areas and multiple circular passes with a UniRake to smooth the surface.

The final steps, which occur the morning of sprig installation  is an application of an all organic pre-plant fertilizer, a "float" to smooth the surface and an application of a pre-emergent herbicide.

Sprigs can be "hand planted" or "machine planted." Both methods are being utilized at Olde Florida. On our teeing surfaces, which have all been laser leveled to an exact 1% front to back slope, the surface is being hand planted and sliced in with a small tractor. The fairways and rough and being machine planted. Both methods broadcast the sprigs on the surface, followed by slicing/cutting in and rolling to smooth and seal the opening that was created in the soil.

It's essential that sprigs receive adequate water for best results during establishment. Sprigs are watered within 30 minutes of planting and we irrigate to keep the soil persistently moist during establishment.  Sprigs must be watered generously during establishment because with  limited roots the plant is unable to reach water in the soil profile. All sprigged areas are lightly  irrigated throughout daylight hours for 7-10 days after planting.

The irrigation is a balance that requires continuous monitoring.  We need to irrigate frequently enough that the sprigged areas do not dry out, but we also need to make sure the irrigation cycles don’t create washing of the soil or over saturate the area. The root system of a sprig also requires oxygen to function. This is where the "art and science" of turfgrass management is put to the test. 

Irrigation is reduced gradually once the plants have established a root system and we see visible signs of growth. As the new turfgrass reaches 1-2" we will reduce irrigation during the day and move to a maintenance irrigation program of "deep and infrequent" nightly watering.

2021 Renovation Update #3 - TifTuf Bermudagrass

It has been a very productive couple of weeks since my last update on the 2021 renovation. Things continue to progress on schedule and as planned!

The Better Billy Bunkers on holes 3 - 8 have all been constructed and the new sand is installed! They look great! Bunker construction has now moved to the next six holes, which are 11-16.

In this update I am excited to report that grassing of the golf course is underway! We are currently installing Certified TifTuf Bermudagrass on holes 3 - 8, and other than the teeing surfaces (which will be sprigged), holes 3 and 5 are completely grassed with our new turfgrass.

In this entry I will focus on TifTuf and provide details on why we selected the variety. 

In addition to several years of on-site evaluation of TifTuf at Olde Florida, I made numerous course visits as well as consulted with agronomists and university researchers prior to making the selection.

The development of TifTuf began in 1992 - the year we constructed Olde Florida! The research on TifTuf was originated by famed turfgrass scientist, Dr. Wayne Hanna. Dr. Hanna has been a good friend to me personally, as well as to the entire turfgrass industry. Dr. Hanna has made several visits to Olde Florida during my 29 year tenure with the club. His successor, Dr. Brian Schwartz also visits Olde Florida several times a year to evaluate current turfgrass varietal testing.

Prior to TifTuf, Dr. Hanna is most known in the industry for his releases of  TifEagle and TifGrand. TifEagle is the turfgrass variety we've had on our greens at Olde Florida since 2000 and TifGrand is the turfgrass we have had on our collars since 2013.  My relationship with Dr. Hanna and the Tifton turfgrass breeding program dates back to the mid 90's when I performed testing at Olde Florida for Dr. Hanna on an experimental grass known as TW-72, which was released in 1997 and subsequently named TifEagle. 


The Tifton breeding program pride themselves on extensive testing. Since 1992, field testing on TifTuf was conducted in Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas, North Carolina and Florida, and after almost 25 years of testing and development TifTuf was jointly released in 2016 by the University of Georgia and the USDA Agricultural Research Service. No other bermudagrass released from the Tifton breeding program has had more data to support its agronomic qualities. This is a link to the: "History of the Turfgrass Breeding Program in Tifton".


TifTuf has numerous qualities that make it a sustainable surface for tees, approaches, fairways and roughs. Key agronomic benefits include:

  • Drought Tolerance – TifTuf has exhibited superior drought tolerance compared to older bermudagrass varieties. TifTuf uses less water and stays green longer without irrigation because of its unique physiological characteristics. During testing, it was determined that TifTuf used 38% less water and retained 95% more green leaf tissue during drought stress when compared to TifWay 419. 
  • Leaf Texture and Color – TifTuf has a very fine leaf texture and a vibrant green color. Visually, TifTuf blends well into areas with other hybrid bermudagrasses. 
  • Wear Tolerance –  TifTuf has exhibited very good wear tolerance.   • Cold Tolerance – TifTuf has excellent cold tolerance in comparison to other bermudagrass varieties. TifTuf stays green longer into the fall, often greens up faster in the spring and seems to have a longer growing season than other bermudagrass varieties.
  • Shade Tolerance – TifTuf has very good shade tolerance, surviving with only 25 percent sunlight transmission during testing.

2021 Renovation Update #2 - Bunker Renovation

It has been a very productive two weeks since my last update, and although the region is in desperate need of rain, the weather has been phenomenal for the construction aspect of the Olde Florida renovation! I am pleased to report that the project is on schedule and almost everything is going exactly as planned. 


In this update I am going to focus on one component of the project, the bunker renovation. A significant aspect of the project is the renovation of the 89 bunkers, which account for 3.27 acres on the golf course. Just shy of 20% of the total cost of the project will go towards the bunker renovation. 


The bunkers at Olde Florida have never been renovated. In the last 29 years we have replaced all of the sand once, but the construction is original. Although the bunkers have played exceptionally well, it was decided to do a complete renovation of the bunkers this summer for two reasons. 


First, a significant number of bunkers have lost the Rees Jones design features that were in place when the course opened in 1993. A second, and much more significant reason for the renovation is because of the bunker construction method. Since we built the bunkers almost three decades ago several new construction methods and liners have been developed that significantly reduce maintenance and improve playability. In particular, the bunker sand washing that routinely occurs after heavy rains is almost eliminated with these new construction methods and materials.

Over the last 10 years I have evaluated and performed on site testing of several bunker liners/construction methods. After significant consideration and analyzation of the aspects of each, the Better Billy Bunker Method was selected. The key component to this construction method is the polymer-coated gravel liner in the floor of the bunker which allows water to pass through at a rate that exceeds 1500 inches per hour. When water is properly diverted around bunkers, even during extremely heavy rain events the bunker sand hardly moves.


Bunker washout is a substantial issue for most golf courses and certainly at Olde Florida. Washouts contaminate sand and require staff to spend countless hours repairing bunkers after major rain events. After a heavy rain it’s not uncommon for us to assign as many as 16 employees, each spending 8-12 hours pumping water, removing silt and shoveling sand to repair bunkers. By installing the Better Billy Bunker Method we will almost eliminate washouts allowing us to reallocate a significant amount of labor to other tasks.  

 

Developed in 2009, the Better Billy Bunker Method has been installed on over 1,200 golf courses worldwide. In the YouTube video here and below are testimonials on the method from Golf Course Superintendent’s at; The Country Club of Castle Pines, The Loxahatchee Club, St. George’s Golf and Country Club, Winged Foot Golf Club, The Robert Trent Jones Golf and Country Club and others. 




Each facilities needs/desires, time frame and budget for a bunker renovation can be different. Therefore, the renovation process to the Better Billy Bunker Method can be slightly different. 

Below is an explanation of the project at Olde Florida. 


During our club closure in March (16th & 17th) Greg Muirhead, Senior Vice President / Senior Designer with Rees Jones, Inc., was onsite to define the features that have been lost. Greg and I were both on site in 1992 during construction, so in addition to the photographs I have from the early days, we both have first hand knowledge of the original shape of the bunkers.  As Greg painted the outlines of each bunker on March 17th I took photos. The photos from that day are now being used to mark the edges for our construction/renovation.

The physical aspect of the bunker renovation process at Olde Florida began with the removal of the existing bunker sand. The removed sand was stockpiled for later use as topdressing in historic wet areas. With the sand removed, the original drainage pipe and limestone gravel was removed from each bunker. Our original thought was we might try to reuse this pipe, but after inspection of the pipe it was determined new pipe would be the safer and wiser choice. After pipe and gravel removal, two crews from Leibold Construction began shaping the floor of the bunkers and moving soil to areas that needed features reestablished.

The floor in each bunker is being shaped to increase the slope and subsequent rate of water infiltration into the drainage pipes. When the floor is shaped to the proper slope and 10" depth (explanation below), drainage is installed. The elevation and slope of each drain line is carefully inspected prior to new pipe and granite gravel being placed in the drainage trenches. 


When drain pipe and gravel installation is complete an exact 3" layer of granite gravel is installed in the entire floor of each bunker and the Better Billy Bunker patented polymer is sprayed to a depth of 3/4". This secures the gavel in place. The gravel layer acts as both a liner between the subgrade and the bunker sand as well as a conduit for water to enter the drain pipe. 


The final step is the installation of 7" of new, angular bunker sand. As was previously mentioned, since the gravel is an exact 3" depth and the sand is an exact 7" depth, the floor of the bunkers are carefully constructed to an exact 10" depth from the floor to the new grass line. The gravel slope/contour matches the sand slope/contour exactly.

2021 Renovation Update #1

It's been only two weeks since the golf course was closed for play, but the progress on the renovation has been tremendous!!! 

The day after closing a cold front stalled on top of Southwest Florida. The chance for rain and a fair amount of wind delayed our second herbicide application for three days. Although it altered our schedule, it was actually a positive since it provided additional time for bermudagrass regrowth! 

My staff was able to complete the second herbicide application Thursday and Friday 4/22 and 4/23.

During the second closed week we had three contractors on site each working on separate aspects of the project. Our main contractor, Leibold Construction is currently working on the bunker renovation. 

The first step in the bunker renovation is the removal of existing sand. After the first week the sand was removed from holes 1-10 and some of the bunkers on holes 11 and 18. We are anticipating the sand from all 148,655 square feet of our bunkers will be removed by the end of day on Wednesday 5/5. Leibold will then begin reshaping the bunkers incorporating some the original features that have been lost and begin the installation of the Better Billy Bunker system.

The contractor that performs our Drill and Fill aerification on the greens was also on site for the first three days of the second week. You may recall that last summer we did a single Drill and Fill aerification. This is a link to a blog entry I previously published on extending the performance of putting greens 

This summer, with the golf course being closed and the subsurface in need of continued modification to maintain the functionality of the USGA greens, we performed a "double". The "double" tightened the area impacted from 6" by 7" to 3" by 7". The holes are 1" in diameter and drilled to a depth of 10". Each hole was completly filled in the process with a total of 149 tons of dried, bagged sand.

Solitude Lake Management also had a productive week starting the installation of the Sox Erosion System around the greens complexes on holes 1 and 5. The Sox product is a bioengineered control system that halts shoreline erosion. 

In the 29 years since being constructed we have experienced a significant amount of erosion in these two areas. This process will restore the original slope and the product will prevent the areas from any future erosion. Once complete, sod is placed on top of the fabric. 

I will provide more information on the Sox system in a future/separate blog entry. 

Hole 5 - 5/1/21

The third contractor on site was Aeration Technology. They are performing a process known as fraise mowing. Seven days after the second herbicide application we began the fraise mowing. The fraise mowing is removing 1" of material, which not only removes the dead material, it also exposes rhizomes (below ground growing parts) that are still living. 


The additional sunlight and oxygen that the living plant material (rhizome) will now be exposed to will allow for increased bermudagrass regrowth prior to the third herbicide application.

My staff who were not involved in the loading of sand into the Drill and Fill machinery were doing our annual, or biennial (depending on the area) trimming of palms and oak trees. This will continue throughout the summer as time permits.

Finally, my staff began the eradication of all "off-type" grass in the TifEagle greens. With the golf course closed for play this summer it was a perfect time to remove the small amount of invasive turfgrass.  After a week without mowing the areas could be clearly identified by their more aggressive growth habit.  

We carefully applied a non-selective herbicide to the small spots. In 30 days the areas will be retreated and a few weeks later will be plugged with TifEagle from our nursery green. The total area affected on the greens is less than 1%.
